5 Good Reasons to Reload Your Ammunition

1. Save $$. If you shoot a great deal and go through a high number of shells a month, reloading can be economical. As with almost anything, buying in bulk can save money. When you buy off the shelf, manufacturing, assembly, and labor costs are incorporated into the price. By assembling the components yourself, you won’t be paying for their time – you will just be using up yours.

2. Custom Loading. Custom reloading allows you to tailor your ammunition to your needs, such as for a certain hunt, a particular animal, or to a specific firearm. For example, every rifle is set to SAAMI guidelines for headspace chambering for each particular cartridge. At that, each rifle is different and ammunition can be loaded to specific chamber dimensions of that firearm. This can help to extend the life of cases for a greater number of reloads, and tends to improve accuracy.

3. Accuracy. More often than not, most reloaders will find that their reloads perform better in their rifles than with factory ammunition. Part of this is because the reloader has a larger choice of powders and bullets to fine tune the load to the rifle. Most reloaders will be pleasantly surprised that their groups are tighter at the range and, in turn, increases shooter confidence in the field.

4. Confidence. Developing loads gives the shooter a better chance to become more familiar with his or her firearm or ammunition and how they perform together. Better loads, shooting more, and the increased confidence that comes with familiarity leads to better placed shots. Another benefit is not only being able to extend one’s range, within reason of course, but also to place shots with greater precision at one’s comfortable range.

5. Hobby. Reloading is a great way to spend time getting to know your gun, your ammunition, and it is a good excuse to spend some extra time outdoors. Also, the more time you spend working on recipes and using them in the field, you will know which recipes to keep and which ones to scrap – think of it as your own research and development lab. It is also a great way to keep yourself immersed in the world of hunting all year round, especially in the off season.

Disclaimer: The above is just one person’s opinion on reasons to reload your ammunition. You should always follow all instructions and safety guidelines and stay within safe limits of your particular firearm.

Safety guidelines are there for a reason.

We do NOT encourage stupid.

I've never reloaded my own before but with the price of ammo lately and the political horizon it's becoming more and more appealing. If it wasn't for that time factor!! I'm sure one day I'll have to take up reloading my own ammo, thanks for the insight.

I didn't take it up back when my hands were steady and my eyes sharp and now I fear that I would just make a mess. I reckon I'll just have to live with factory loads although I do buy some reloads from others that I trust from time to time.

I believe #5 is the foundation to reloading. If a person doesn't have as interest in it and enjoy it he, or she is going to screw up somewhere along the way and the results could be dangerous. A good friend lives and breaths this stuff and I would trust him way beyond where I could trust myself because it doesn't appeal to me at all. I used to do it anyway, but never really felt safe with my interest level.

I am planning to retire at 55 due to frugalness and deligent planning and reloading is one of the hobbies I am planning to fill the extra time.

Hubby used to reload his own shotgun shells - when he shot a lot of trap, now we just buy ammo... but we still have all the reloading equipment. Maybe he'll get back into it some day.

I've been looking into it for some time now...I need a teacher...and when I find one, I'll invest in whatever equipment is required. In my neck of the woods...bullets are scarce. Example...the super Walmart is OUT, and stay out, of ammo.

I have reloaded my own for many years. I have tested my reloads against factory for grouping and speed and have yet to find that I couldn't beat factory in both catagories even though sometimes not by much. I was always led to believe that reloads were unreliable junk but now I know that's not true. It all depends on the person doing the reloading. It is a very relaxing hobby but it does require your full attention. The only time I made a mistake like not having a case to catch the powder or knocking over a filled case and stupid stuff like that was when I was trying to also watch tv. you just can't do that.

I think reloading can be a great hobby. My husband reloads for both of us, and he really enjoys it. I need to overcome my fear of reloading and try it. I just keep picturing myself as one of the terrible warnings for why you should pay attention to safety rules. Julia

Excellent post and ideas. I've never thought much about taking up re-loading; now I will (think about it, at least.)

It is like tying your own flies for flyfishing - it greatly enriches the experience.

Most I believe get into it for the cost savings - which these days are substantial, especially if you cast your own, which is just a further extension of reloading.

Not for everyone but there is something to be said for catching a fish or harvesting game with implements you made...

reason #6: if you reload, no politician can cut off your supply of ammo with a stroke of the pen.
